So…
Yesterday I returned a home theatre system to futureshop because of a defect with the receiver and was looking for a truehd system with speakers.
Once returning the system I ventured to the back of the store where I encountered a box with a Yamaha receiver (HTR6140) and Energy speakers inside (c-50’s).
The salesperson saw me eyeballing the open box system (which was brand new in the box, all speakers were in original packaging.
He began the pitch by telling me how great the deal was. I nodded, and saw the price at 629.
I asked two questions.
1.) Is this a trueHD receiver. He said ‘yes’.
2.) Are these speakers larger than the take classic series. He said ‘yes’ they were just one step up from that series.
HE then said the original price was 1299.
That is what sold me. 1299 package for 629… I went for it. Paid the cost of the system on my debit and as we are wheeling out the system I see another sales person talking to another costumer. They are standing above my new system, I hear the salesperson explain how it was open box, but the price for a new package was 699.
My jaw dropped. I had caught my sales guy lying to my face.
I turned to him and said, “I thought you said this was 1299?”
It was 1299 about two weeks ago. (since learned that too was a lie, the price dropped beginning of december)
“BEsides,” he said, I gave you a free warranty.”
That wasn’t the point. BEfore I could say anything he had my system outside without myself or my friend who was with me. I was so flustered I didn’t have a chance to question what had happened. So I took the system home and thought about it for a while.
Afterwards I decided to open the product and see what I had gotten.
The receiver… not trueHD.
The speakers, three times the size of the take classic series.
Waiting for a response from the local futureshop. The main branch was contacted, and they’ve passed the matter onto my local.
I doubt there is anything they’ll do. Anyone ever have an experience such as this, if so, what did they do for compensating you for lying to your face.
Truly a horrible experience. Will never shop there again.

Same thing happened to me last year around Christmas 2007. My boyfriend bought me a laptop, which he was promised was new, and was the last model in the store (Brampton, ON) and was reduced to $1267 because the box was torn. The sales rep proceeded to offer him a “Free Warranty” included in the price. In actuality, the laptop new was originally $1299 and was on sale for $899 that week. It was true that it was the last one in the store, but we did not need the warranty because I know a lot of certified Techs. We went back to return the warranty and was told it was a packaged deal and could not return any of it without returning all of it. BUT to return it, we had to pay a 10% restocking fee. I was also told I had to drive 40 minutes to the original store to return it. Total BS. I told them we would go back to the original store if they paid for our time, gas and mileage. I yelled at them for 20 minutes and refured to leave. I made the manager shake a little after telling him tied selling (couldn’t return the warranty because it was bundled in) was illegal in Canada and is considered coercion. He disappeared for at least 40 minutes to speak to the “Store Manager”. Bottom line, I ended up getting the warranty for free, total cost of my $899 laptop ended up to be $670 as they had to add the warranty back on for a total of $899. No 10% restocking fee BS. Stand your ground. Hope this helps.
