Ok all these posts on here are now freaking me out.

I bought an HP Pavilion laptop about a year ago (June, 2008 to be exact) and 3 weeks after the manufacturer’s warranty expired what a coincidence my laptop crashed – blue screen of death error anyone? – anyways I called HP and they wanted $40 to diagnose it and then probably $400+ to fix it, whatever. They couldn’t help, that’s fine.
I tried to fix it but clearly its’ corrupt and I think it’s the hard drive.

I look at my receipt and I have the PSP package!!!! I have 3 years coverage on Performance Guarantee, Power Surge Protection, Parts Coverage, Labour Coverage, Accessory Coverage, however, I am now getting worried that they are going to turn around and say well it’s not covered because it was caused by this.

I just don’t get I mean you spend so much money on the product and then another nice chunk on the warranty and then they try and screw people around? I just don’t understand this. I paid $350 for my PSP warranty, so my shit better be covered.

It’s a brand new laptop! I don’t play games on it, I’ve never installed more RAM, or done any other modifications. I had Norton on there to keep out the viruses (hopefully). I know that viruses aren’t covered, so I”m sure they’re going to say it was caused by a virus.
People that have run tests on it think it’s the hard drive. How does a hard drive go on a brand new laptop?
so I’m sure I’ll write back in a few days bitching about how I’m going to get screwed over by FS too!

Stay tuned…

It seems that you may be lucky and the repair will be covered. But beware, these guys will try to squeeze more money out of you by calling it a virus problem or operating system problem etc. Chances are, they will ask you to shell out money.

If you are prepared, you can keep a tight hand on your pocket. Otherwise, these guys are experts at picking your pocket.

Good Luck

HEY GUYS GUESS WHAT!!!

just got my laptop back last night AND nothing out of my pocket!!!!!!!

When I took it in the guy told me everything is covered except for water damage, which I knew I didn’t do, but I was still worried.

They sent it away for about a week and told me when I picked it up that they had to replace the RAM.

I wondered why they had to send it away to do that, I mean are they not that competent techs at FS??? weird.

Oh well doesn’t matter, I’m thankful I got the extended warranty and still have another 2 years!

I was quite shocked that it went that easily!

obviously the fabulous technicians you took your laptop to are retarded. Even though I’m glad your warranty covered the replacement parts, those stupid technicians should have found out the ram was the issue in about 30 seconds. Any idiot can do a quick ram test and replace it in 5 minutes. Why would they require sending your laptop away for 1 week for that? Also, PSP covers ram replacement from off the shelves. If they were smart (which no technicians are at futueshop, they are all this retarded) they would have replaced it for you in 5 mintues from the shelf.

I know! everyone I told what the problem was they said why did they have to send it away? even my husband, who doesn’t know much about fixing computers said I could have replaced the RAM in 5 minutes!!

But I also wanted them to check the blu-ray DVD player which I thought wasn’t working, but apparently they couldn’t even scan it at the store, “it wouldn’t let them”.

Yup. They sure are smart there!

they dont try to screw you… it doesnt hurt the employee or the individual store at all if they fix your unit under psp… most associates try to take as much advantage of the psp as possible hoping the customer will continue to buy it, which most do, because the associates help.!

Future shop is not at liberty to make the decision of whether they fix it or send it away.

Within warranty period future shop will never touch
Toshiba Laptops
Apple Laptops
Acer Laptops

They will only fix
HP Laptops

And only if the total repair cost is less than X amount of dollars and all the parts are in store.

Desktops are different but thats how it is for laptops

I love how you call the techs retarded and yet you posted a huge blog bitching about a company when they didn’t do anything wrong…

You complained about how the warranty sucked BEFORE you gave them a chance to fix it and then complained that a “brand new” laptop’s harddrive might break after a year… a year old laptop is NOT brand new..in fact it’s maybe a quarter through it’s expected lifespan.

I don’t understand how people can be so cynical and judgmental BEFORE anything wrong is done to them. Why are you surprised warranty covered your laptop? You do realize that FAR more people are helped by warranty than turned away right? but noone posts the good stories because people just love to complain, you are a perfect example, complaining before anything even happened…

The reason they had to send it away is because it was still under manufacturers warranty, so rather than foot the bill for the new parts/labour themselves, they send it off.

no it wasn’t under manufacturer’s warranty…that expired 3 weeks before it crashed.

Luciousnic: PS I never complained I was more so worried because #1, I’ve had bad experiences with warranties, #2, have heard of horror stories, etc.

so you’re telling me laptops only lasts for a few years? I don’t think so. And yeah it’s not common for one year old laptops to suddenly crash, especially when I did nothing to it and used it for pretty much browsing the net.

Please re-read my post, I explained my problem and said I hope that it’s covered, but wouldn’t be surprised if I got screwed over somehow.

IDIOT.

Laptops do only last for a few years. I’d say four years is the typical life span of a mid to high end laptop. After that you’ll probably be needing/wanting an upgrade anyway.

I’m not sure if its “common” for laptops to crash after a year, but its certainly not unheard of. I’m guessing it happens fairly often, since 1 year is the standard mfg warranty.

So let me get this straight:

1) Your laptop breaks out of warranty.
2) You take it to Future Shop and they fix it without a hassle.

Where exactly does Future Shop suck in this? Why are you shocked it went so easily? For every story on this website there are thousands of customers that are completely satisfied. If they were not then Future Shop would be out of business.

Technicians need to send the laptop away because of their repair system. Diagnosing a laptop takes hours (with running full HDD tests, RAM tests, Mobo tests, Video tests, CPU tests, etc….). If the tests show RAM has failed it can easily be ordered and replaced. However if it’s something else (like a motherboard) then the laptop needs to be sent to the depot where the tests will be re-run and then the laptop will be fixed. It’s faster to just send the laptop to the depot in the first place.

And I really enjoy the comment that you could replace the RAM in five minutes. You could not diagnose what was wrong with it and yet you immediately think you’re the best.

Something to say?
