Now I have always been one to shy away from extended warranties, because I have never puchaced anything at a price that I thought needed one, usually $100 to $200 and figured if anything didn’t go wrong in the first year then chances  were that it would last longer and I would get my moneys worth out of it, however  I purchased a Sony 50″ rear screen projection  TV about 2 years ago.  I got a great deal on a floor model that they wanted to get rid of and they threw in a full extended warranty as part of the package.

I replaced one projector lamp ($345) after the first year, unusual said the tech that I spoke to at Sony, but because it was a floor model it could be that it was on for extended periods of time which lessened the life of the lamp.  In any event this past week the color started to go weird so I called the 1 800 number for service and a tech from an independent company that does Sony warranty work came out and after looking the TV over told me that he would submit the repair estimate to Future Shop and that I should hear something in the next 10 days.

Before that time had elapsed I received a call from the warranty folks at Future Shop telling me that they were not going to repair the TV, and that I should go to the store closest to me and get a brand new TV.

I figured that the sales would start and they would try to upsell me to something that I did not want, well surprised was I when I went to the store and was told that not only would I get a new TV but because Sony doesn’t make that particular type of TV anymore that I would be given a 52″  LCD TV instead, free delivery and removal of the old TV.

The only thing that I would have to purchase was another warranty for the new TV, did I buy the extended warranty, you bet I did, it was the best $369 I have ever spent, wouldn’t be without it on a purchase that big.

I bought a Mac December 2007 and at the time my Mac was about $2799 plus taxes. I was considering taking the apple care extended warranty but the future shop sales man was pitching the future shop extended warranty to me. What he said to me was that ” Future Shop Provides better services than apple. We have technicians who repair computers on the spot in the back and if there is a problem where they cannot repair the computer they will give me a new one.” He then went on to say that “apple does not provide you with a new computer if they cannot repair it and apples wait time for repairs is a longer than future shop”.

Now after hearing how great Future Shop was from the salesman and how well my computer would be treated if i bought the extended warranty.. i purchased it i think it was $549.00 in total i paid $3600 for it.

About 3 month later i had an issue with my Keyboard it for some reason stopped working and i called apple to inquire.. they asked that i go to one of their apple stores which was conveniently around the corner from where i live.. i went in explained the problem he looked at my keyboard said that it needs to be replaced.. So the apple Repair guy ordered a new keyboard and being that it was on a Friday that i went in, he lent me a plug and play keyboard so i could still use my computer over the weekend. On the Monday my new keyboard was in i took my Laptop in got it back same day i was like wow apple is fast.

It’s been about a year and a half now since i bought my laptop and i started to see new problems with my cd drive and my screen so being that my apple 1 year manufactures warranty was up, i had to start using the future shop one.

anyway to make a long story short i brought my computer in about 2 weeks ago and i’m still waiting for it to be fixed.. Future shop sends all of their computers to Nexicore which is a third party repair company.. Future Shop does not have ANY in store MAC technician and Nexicores services with macs are extremely poor. i mean why the hell does it take them so long? when they told me 3 weeks to 60 days i was so angry cause i was not told this when i got it. I was mislead into thinking that future shop would provide better services. I spent an Extra $200 on the future shop warranty while the apple care one was cheaper and services were WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better.

Ya that really sucks, I guess in hindsight one should always check the manufacturer to see if they agree with the Future Shop salesman about the warranty, but you shouldn’t have to do that if they are honest, however it seems buyer beware applies to most things now, and that’s a sad commentary on things.

I bought an HP a couple of years ago, didn’t get the extended warranty and had a screen go on me within the first year, took it back to FS and they replaced the screen, but that only took about 1 week.

What im doing now is making a case.. See i work at a law firm as a Legal Assistant i spoke to my boss about it and he says for me to make my case so what i did was i contacted their head quarters in Burnaby, BC and stated my case. The rep agreed with everything i had to say and said that he will have the district manager contact me.. but i wasn’t done. I contacted 2 future shop stores and asked them what the difference between apple care and future shops extended warranty, and how future shops extended warranty is better than apples.. what the reps didn’t know is i was recording them and now i have all of their lies recorded as proof that the sales reps are not 100 percent knowledgeable and they are very misleading. I’m still waiting for my computer as we speak.. I’m going to make them give me a brand new Macbook Pro and pay for my apple care and if not i’ll sue them for the amount of money i lost while i was waiting for my mac to be repaired plus a full refund.

…you do realise it is illegal to record people without their consent or their knowledge of it, no? It’s why telemarketers must say it before recording you. If anything, the employees/company will be able to press their own charges. Not to mention, your “evidence” would be thrown out of court? Also, a keyboard is quite easy to fix, pop the keys out, fix it. A screen? not so much. It would not be the misleading as much as a different problem. It would be like me comparing a flat on my car, to a transmission problem. It would be better to speak to the store managers or the rep you spoke to and get to the root of it that way.

good thing the warranty was included, i encourage almost everyone to buy the PSP or PRP as it is a fraction of the cost of the product itself, why risk spending your hard earned money when you can just spend a little bit extra and get the products repaired or replaced

You have no legal case. If you knew anything about the law then you would know to read the fine print, aka the legal contract that you signed and agreed to at the time of purchase. It states out repair times (less then 60 days) and supersedes all oral representations and agreements.

They don’t need to prove that their warranty is better then apple care. Why should they? Because it’s inferior they can’t pitch it to you? Besides all they have to say is that Applecare doesn’t cover the screen and a court will take that as proof that their warranty is better (in some aspects).

And recording people without their permission is a dick move.

The moral of this story is to know what you are buying and always read the fine print.

“You have no legal case. If you knew anything about the law then you would know to read the fine print, aka the legal contract that you signed and agreed to at the time of purchase.”

One little problem here, you have a common misconception of the law. “Fine print” which entails significant conditions must be pointed out to the customer/client and usual initialed off on. In addition the customer/client must be given appropriate time to review the contract entirely before purchase. In most cases in Canada contracts with special fine print hidden away have those conditions declared null and void. Given I know how the FS transaction works, I would say the customer is not given reasonable time to review the contract entirely before purchase.

Each customer signs the bottom of the receipt which states that you agree to all PSP terms and conditions. At this time you can (if you have not yet) ask to see the PSP Brochure. This brochure is usually on display everywhere in the store and the associate usually uses one during the sale. If you decline to sign you will be given a refund immediately.

You can also return the PSP within 30 Days if you wish to further review the terms and conditions. I wish you good luck at your law firm, it seems like someone who neglects to read the fine print of a contract will need it when practicing law.

You can take all the time you want, your the one who signed it right away. If you didn’t have the PSP then you wouldn’t have any option but to buy a new one

Hi,

I work at Future Shop and yes i do sell warranties because they really do work. On many occasions i see customers get brand new computers because they had our service plan! Most of the time they get a more performing one because technology changes so fast. Yes it usually take 2 weeks for a computer to come back from nexicore but at least it comes back repaired and you dont have to pay enormous fees for repairs!

@ the costumer with the mac problem: repairing a mac is very expensive and the service is slow if you deal directly with mac! In Montreal a costumer must take a appointment just to go see a mac technician. It usually takes 3 days before you see one. So basically you get a free repair and the only thing its gonna cost you is patience. And imagine if we cant fix it, you get a new one! If that day happens you will be very very happy you had our service plan!

Something to say?
