Scott Road Future Shop, in Surrey BC told $40 to run “diagnostics” on my broken laptop… and then they will tell me how much more to fix after diagnosing.

A day later future shop told me that the mother-board is busted and it is cheaper to buy a new laptop than fix. Also that Future Shop will deduct $40 if I decide to buy a new laptop.

Another guy down the street charged me $30 and told me that one of the RAM slots are bad… and fixed it by removing one of the two RAM chips.

I went back to future shop to tell that they mis-diagnosed and almost got me to spend another $600 on a new laptop… and either give my money back or at least deduct $40 off a 2GIG RAM chip I wanted to buy (to jump my laptop back to 2GIG).

Now came the Future Shop story…
1) Future Shop runs a program called RMI to diagnose, and Future shop is not resposible for RMI-program mis diagnosing…. and cannot refund $40.
2) That $40 deduction only applies to only labour that they would provide me… not a cost deduction.

Bottom line… I can guess how many other customers future shop has scammed through this “diagnosing” drill…. to buy new laptops.

Sometimes they dont even run diagnostics. they just assume they know the problem and screw you for hundreds. If I were you I would go back and demand to speak to a manager and not a tech or lead tech and make sure the manager knows how they screwed you. In my situation the manager wasnt even aware of most of the shit that happenes in his tech department. I think the solution to all the posts here is to never shop at FS again. The next time I buy a laptop, itll be from Bestbuy (before anyone says anything, im aware they are owned by the same people. that said, that is the only similarity).

It was properly diagnosed. The DIMM slot is part of the motherboard. If it’s faulty the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard. It doesn’t sound like you asked for a more detailed description when you picked it up. The ‘guy down the street’ let you know how to continue to use a faulty board by removing RAM from the faulty slot…did he fix anything? No. The same fault still exists.

First off, how can he has to ask for a “more detailed description” when he doesn’t even know the intricacies of a computer. Secondly, why is he supposed to assume that the computer tech didn’t give him the most professional service and description of the problem possible? You are suggesting that he goes into Future Shop paranoid so that he may know to press the computer techs to properly explain to him what his wrong with his laptop?

It seems the larger problem is that you don’t understand what he is trying to get across: An error in comprehension. Give me a second and I will show you the thesis (forgive my abuse of this word) of his statement:

“A day later future shop told me that the mother-board is busted and it is cheaper to buy a new laptop than fix”

“Another guy down the street charged me $30 and told me that one of the RAM slots are bad”

What he is trying to get across with these two statements is that there was another option available in regards to fixing his laptop to make it useable instead of getting a whole new laptop. You’re argument is that his laptop wasn’t actually fixed and that the “same fault still exists.” Yes you are right, but this is insignificant in the argument being put forward, and that is the fact that all of the FACTS were left out when he was told it is best to replace his laptop completely. They did NOT tell him that his computer can still work minus one slot. Telling the truth but leaving out KEY information is a form of lying. You’re argument is that they did not lie to him, and you are right, all of the information said was true, the motherboard is essentially flawed because of the DIMM slot. But, they left out information. This customers pursuit was to have a laptop that is useable, NOT perfect in every way mechanically – and this is the error in judgement made by the futureshop techs, and this is the error in comprehension you are making.

Also, I do not know much about computers, so forgive me if I have misunderstood some of the jargon being used here. Hopefully you will understand the general ‘thesis’ trying to be put across from this post :p

I edited your post to show the quote better ;)

@Morgine said it pretty well. The techs didn’t necessarily mis diagnose it but at the same time didn’t really tell the customer that the laptop was usable. Now depending on the age of the laptop, it may have not been worth running it on just one stick of ram, depending on what its used for and such.

Also there’s no such program as RMI. They use memtest or pc-check (as far as I’m aware). They’re part of the MRI diagnostic disc though..lol

Something to say?
